Reflections of an Interim: Why Being a Leader in Care Is the Greatest Job in the World

As I come to the end of my time with this incredible team, I’ve found myself reflecting on what it truly means to be a leader in care. Not the job title, not the responsibility, not even the outcomes we strive so hard to achieve—but the feeling you leave behind.

Because at its heart, leadership in care is not just about systems, targets, or strategy. It’s about people.

This week, as we celebrated together with a country and western party for the residents—my leaving party, though it didn’t feel like a goodbye—I was reminded of something I have always believed, but perhaps never felt so deeply: people may forget what you said, they may forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.

And that is the greatest privilege of this role.

Looking around the room, seeing residents laughing, staff letting their hair down, and a team that felt safe, valued, and connected—this is what leadership looks like. It’s not just in the policies we write or the meetings we lead. It’s in the moments we create. That said, it’s not that policies, procedures, and governance don’t matter—they absolutely do. They keep people safe, provide structure, and set the standards we must uphold. But policy on its own is just words on a page.

What truly matters is how those words are lived.

Leadership is what translates policy into practice. It’s the feeling you create in a team—the culture where values are not just written but felt. Because safety, compassion, and dignity aren’t delivered through documents alone; they are experienced through people.

And when a team feels it, that’s when policy becomes real.

It’s in:

- The confidence you build in someone who didn’t believe in themselves

- The culture you shape where people feel they belong

- The compassion you model that ripples through every interaction

- The joy you allow into environments that can sometimes feel heavy

Leadership in care is deeply human. It requires resilience, yes—but also warmth, humour, and authenticity. You don’t just manage services; you hold people. You guide them through challenges, celebrate their wins, and sometimes simply stand beside them when things are hard.

And in doing so, you leave something behind that no policy ever could: a feeling.

That party wasn’t just a celebration. It was a reflection of a team that had grown together, supported one another, and created something meaningful for the people they care for every single day. Seeing residents light up, staff smiling with pride—that is the impact of good leadership.

Being an interim leader is a unique experience. You step into spaces, often in times of change or uncertainty, and you have a window—sometimes small, sometimes significant—to make a difference. You don’t always see the long-term outcomes, but you feel the shift. And sometimes, that is enough.

Because if you’ve created an environment where people feel valued, heard, and inspired—then you’ve done the job.

So as I move on to the next chapter, I take this with me:

Leadership is not about how long you stay.

It’s about what you leave behind.

And if what you leave behind is a team that feels stronger, residents who feel happier, and a culture that continues to care deeply—then there is no greater job in the world.

Moments like these are why we do what we do.

As this intrepid Sheriff gallops into the sunset, on a quest to find yet another town in need of his heroic touch, let’s not kid ourselves—this gig was no cakewalk. It’s hard to walk in as a new Sheriff, but I tip my hat to a job well done and to the memories I’ll cherish forever. Who could forget my unforgettable duet with Derek belting out "Islands in the Stream"? Talk about a tune that could make a cactus weep! Upholding standards and ensuring top-notch care was a breeze, but when it came to line dancing, well, that’s a whole heap of trouble, partner! Saddle up and hold on tight; it’s a wild ride!
